Driving to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe or Livingstone in Zambia from South Africa is a long trip. With the cost of fuel and the head-aches involved with organizing a carnet de passage, along with all the documentation needed for travelling through border posts, it is definitely worthwhile looking at flights!
Major airlines like British Airways and SAA have flights to Livingstone and Victoria Falls. To find reasonable rates for flights, it is a good idea to compare prices online for your required dates. A helpful tip is that flights during the week are normally less expensive than flights on Fridays, as this is when the demand goes up. You can choose between economy, first class and business class options which will of course affect the ticket prices.
Prices from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls vary for BA and SAA from R2600 – R5600 return, depending on the dates, for Economy class tickets. With BA, flights from Cape Town to Victoria Falls have a stop in Johannesburg, and prices are roughly R3900 for a return ticket, in Economy class. SAA’s flights are about R4300, with a stopover in Johannesburg too (also economy class).
1Time Airlines and Kulula offer cost-effective scheduled flights from Cape Town to Livingstone, or Cape Town to Victoria Falls (on the Zimbabwe side) and Johannesburg to Livingstone, or Johannesburg to Victoria Falls.
From Johannesburg to Livingstone, 1Time offers return tickets at a cost of about R1800, and Kulula from about R2600. It seems that it is more economical to fly to Livingstone than Victoria Falls, but then you have to keep in mind that you would have to transfer to Zimbabwe from Zambia, when going to Victoria Falls from Livingstone.
Make sure you do a price comparison if you are looking for the best deals on a flight to see the incredible Victoria Falls.
