When deciding on the best time to visit Victoria Falls, bear in mind our two overarching seasons – rainy season and dry season. Here is everything you need to know about the weather before booking your holiday to Ilala Lodge Hotel!
The beautiful town of Victoria Falls is a year-round destination, but your experience and activity list can vary greatly depending on when you visit. To help you decide on the best time to visit Victoria Falls – according to your and your family’s needs and preferences – let’s compare our two chief seasons!
Here in Victoria Falls, spring, summer, autumn and winter are merely pitstops under the banner of our true yearly markers: Rainy season and dry season. Each season offers its own unique set of charms and challenges – let’s walk through them together.
The Dry Season: May to October
Comfortable Weather
The dry season, spanning from May to October, covers the Southern Hemisphere’s autumn, winter, and early spring. During this period, temperatures are moderate and extremely comfortable, with temperatures rarely dropping below 13°C (55°F). This is with the exception of October, when things really start to heat up. Our winters might be a world away from those chilly white-outs you experience in the Northern Hemisphere, but don’t be fooled – you’ll still need to pack some warm clothes in your suitcase.
Best Bush (And Falls) Visibility
The dry weather means the bush surrounding Victoria Falls is less dense, making this the ideal time of year for planning a safari to one of the national parks near Vic Falls. Animals gather around the shrinking water sources, making them easier to spot.
(There are plenty of fabulous day trip options – simply ask our Tours Desk to help you.)
The clear skies also ensure that you have an unobstructed view of the majestic Falls when you walk along the Cliff Path, or dine on the award-winning Cassia Restaurant’s terrace.
Ideal For Adventure
Whether you’re planning a thrilling white-water rafting trip or a scenic helicopter flight over Victoria Falls, the dry season offers stable weather conditions that are ideal for outdoor activities.
Larger Crowds
Because the dry season is the most popular time to visit Victoria Falls, you might encounter more tourists, especially during peak months. It’s wise to book your accommodations and activities well in advance to get the best rates.
The Green Season: November to April
Lush Scenery
The Green Season, beginning with the first rains in November, transforms the landscape into a vibrant tapestry of green. This season is aptly named for its rich, lush vegetation that creates a stunning contrast to the dry season’s more arid environment.
(Note: The Victoria Falls rainforest is always green thanks to the constant spray it experiences from the water pushed out of the Falls’ chasm. It’s well worth looking ‘touristy’ and wearing that rain poncho, especially if you have electronics on you. Otherwise, make like some and revel in getting soaked to the skin! There’s something magical about being doused in water from The Smoke That Thunders…)
A Birding Bonanza
Migrant birds arrive with the rains, making the rainy season an excellent time for birdwatching enthusiasts. The bush becomes a haven for bird species, and the improved birding conditions are a significant draw for many visitors.
Less Crowded
With fewer tourists visiting the Falls during this season, you can enjoy a more tranquil experience at Victoria Falls. This is ideal for those who prefer a quieter escape.
Hot & Humid Weather
November to February can be extremely hot, with temperatures soaring up to 40°C (104°F). As the dad joke goes: ‘It’s not the heat that gets you, it’s the humidity!’ While some cope well with suana-like conditions, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. The hot weather does make for excellent swimming opportunities though, and we’ve got a sparkling blue pool with your name on it.
Variable Water Levels
While the rains bring vibrant changes, they also lead to variable river levels. Deep rains in January and February can lead to flooding, which means the Zambezi River might be at its fullest by March and April, affecting the visibility and volume of the falls.
Note: For more information on the water volume of the Falls, click here. River water volume does not necessarily correlate with the wet and dry seasons because the rains from the Falls’ source on the Angolan border still need to travel many kilometres before they reach us!
A Final Word
So, when is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?
It truly depends on what you’re seeking in your adventure. If you’re after comfortable weather and easy wildlife spotting, the dry season is perfect for you. However, if you’re excited by lush landscapes, birdwatching, a more serene atmosphere and plenty of pool time, the Green Season offers a unique and rewarding experience.
No matter when you choose to visit, Victoria Falls promises an unforgettable adventure with its breathtaking views and diverse experiences. Plan accordingly, and you’re sure to have a memorable stay with us at Ilala Lodge Hotel.
