Winter in Victoria Falls

By Ilala Lodge on July 14, 2016

Whether you’re looking to escape the cold, beat the rush of peak season travel, or simply planning a long-anticipated African holiday, winter is a fantastic time to visit Victoria Falls. While the next few months may be considered the year’s chilliest in the continent’s adventure capital, there are plenty of reasons to plan your trip during this particular season, including pleasant weather, various activities and a range of exciting specials.

Warm Weather

Winter in Victoria Falls is a considerably mild affair that occurs between June and August each year. With warm, sunny days and cool nights, it is often favourable to the more extreme heat of summer. Daytime maximum temperatures range from 25C to 28C, while nighttime lows descend as far as 7C. As such, it’s important to pack a diverse array of clothing on your winter trip to Victoria Falls – light and airy clothing, as well as hats and sunglasses for the days, and warmer clothing, including long pants for the evenings.

Great Specials

As with other holiday destinations, many Victoria Falls lodges and hotels run winter specials on accommodation, restaurants, and activities. During this time, Ilala Lodge is running two exclusive specials: book our unbeatable 2-Night Getaway Sharing for US$470 per person sharing, or take advantage of a free Ra-Ikane Cruise and dinner at The Palm Restaurant when you book a 3-night stay.

Exciting Activities

Winter in Victoria Falls occurs in the Medium to High Water Season when the level of the Zambezi River is neither too low, nor too high. As water makes its way over the Falls, large sections of the cliff face are exposed, and views often extend all the way to the bottom of its vast 111m length. The spray during this time is visible, but not overwhelming, and allows for a bit of fun to be had in the Victoria Falls Rainforest, whilst not obscuring your view of the waterfall.

Aside from visiting one of the Natural Wonders of the World, the Medium to High Water Season is also a great time of year for a vast range of activities in Victoria Falls. Visitors can choose from an exhilarating white-water rafting trip along the Zambezi, leisurely one-day or multi-day canoe trips, or exquisite sunset cruises on a boat such as the elegant Ra-Ikane. What’s more, from May to August the water conditions are great for fly fishing and spinning for Tiger Fish, as the water is very clear, and the volume is slowly starting to drop.

Almost all land-based Victoria Falls activities are available during winter: game viewing is spectacular as the wildlife is beginning to congregate along the river and around waterholes. The weather is warm enough for long elephant-back rides and lion walks, and this is the best time of year for a day trip to Chobe.
